If you accept that it is in the interest of a nation to mitigate what inequalities they can. Programs to address these needs must be created and paid for through taxation. Progressive taxation is a ideal way to pay for programs as it taxes those most able to bear the extra burden. If you don't accept that premise in whole or in part then progressive taxation seems wrong and a flat tax seems fair.
